How To Design An Emotion

How to Design an Emotion argues that humanity relies on emotions without adequately defining what emotions are. It distinguishes physiological affect, conscious feeling, and emotion, asking whether emotions are natural kinds we discover or meanings we construct.

Drawing on philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, semiotics, music theory, and computer science, Cecil “Cézjah” John challenges prevailing theories of concepts, emotional intelligence, and emotion detection. The book proposes formal conceptual, semiotic, and computational models for explaining how emotional meaning is constructed.

Its central thesis is simple: human beings construct emotions by interpreting feelings through context, goals, and symbolic meaning. The book therefore moves beyond defining emotion toward explaining how emotional meaning can be deliberately understood, modeled, and ultimately designed.
